The Nakayama Grand Jump is one of the two most prestigious steeplechase horse races in Japan. This is known to be 中山グランドジャンプ. It was originally the spring race of Nakayama Daishogai until it changed its name into what it is now. This means that the first season of Nakayama Grand Jump was in 1999.


The Nakayama Grand Jump is a Grade 1 race held every year in the middle of April. It is open for all Thoroughbred horses that are four years old and older. However, in order for horses to be qualified, four year old horses need to weigh 62 kilograms. Five year old and older horses need to weigh 63.5 kilograms. Additionally, local and international horses compete in this race.


There is no limit as to how many foreign-bred and trained horses can participate in the tournament. However the maximum number of horses that can compete is 16.

The Nakayama Grand Jump has one of the biggest purse or prize money for steeplechase jump races in Japan. This is because it has ¥142,660,000 total prize money. This is approximately $1,240,522.

The Race Track of the Nakayama Grand Jump


The Nakayama Grand Jump is held at Tokyo Racecourse in Fuchu, Tokyo, Japan. The track surface is turf that is both right and left-handed. The racecourse that the horses run through is a twisted path where they have to jump over a series of hedges, brush fence, water ditches, and hurdles. Additionally, the racecourse is over 4,250 meters long with a dirt track they have to go through.

There have been various horses that have won the Nakayama Grand Jump over the years. The most notable ones are Oju Chosan, Karasi, and Gokai.


Oju Chosan

Oju Chosan is a Thoroughbred Japanese-bred horse that has won the Nakayama Grand Jump four times since 2016 to 2019. She joined the competition when she was a five year old. Besides this tournament, she has won various horse races in Japan.



Karasi is a steeplechase horse that was bred in Ireland and has won the Nakayama Grand Jump race three times. He won it from 2005 to 2007. He is also part of the Australian Racing Hall of Fame.



Gokai is one of the older Thoroughbred horses that joined and won the Nakayama Grand Jump race in 2000 and 2001. He first joined the competition when he was a seven year old.
